Liesbet, you are right that recognition and changing habits are two very hard steps. To be honest, it still sounds like you are doing a lot. But, they are all things you enjoy, at least. Recognition is always the first step, and possibly the hardest. Although, actually changing a habit or routine or approach or way of thinking is not to be underestimated either. I am so happy for you about the balance you have found and the exciting times ahead. It is so nice to take it easy and chose your activities based on your desires or needs. :-)Liesbethttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13402741679152508367noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2137356124184306084.post-45299197502589614712017-03-17T08:54:55.345-07:002017-03-17T08:54:55.345-07:00Vicki, I am so glad to hear that you have committe...Vicki, I am so glad to hear that you have committed to the decision to retire in June, keeping only a little part-time work. It must be so hard to turn down the full-time offers that keep coming your way.

As for turning retirement into a bunch of "to do" lists, honestly, that was exactly what I was planning to do, initially, and the busyness was what I was afraid of giving up. My whole identity was wrapped up in being busy; that was what made me a worthy person, I thought. I credit several retirement bloggers for the advice to not jump into too many commitments immediately upon retirement. That helped open my mind to the possibility of exploration rather than simply replacing one set of "to do's" with another.

JudeDr Sock https://www.blogger.com/profile/13378594360241846301noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2137356124184306084.post-85326169669581104832017-03-16T15:34:28.671-07:002017-03-16T15:34:28.671-07:00"I am looking at it as a discovery." I know myself and I can already see the lists of things to do being generated. I appreciate you sharing the beginning of your new journey. It will definitely help me as I consider the future too!Vickinoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2137356124184306084.post-90199859093654353282017-03-15T12:56:52.504-07:002017-03-15T12:56:52.504-07:00Mona, thanks so much for your comment. I don't know that high achievers and Type A's ever can truly escape performance anxiety. That question, "What's new?" can be annoying at any stage of life.

JudeDr Sock https://www.blogger.com/profile/13378594360241846301noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2137356124184306084.post-1501192603564342542017-03-15T12:53:02.434-07:002017-03-15T12:53:02.434-07:00Carole, yes, I feel very lucky and grateful. Yes! A pyjama party for us -- we seem to both be on the same journey and at a similar stage in it. I wrote a direct email to you (a long one!) using the email function of your website/blog. Unfortunately, the email was blocked. I believe that you have my email, so if you send me an email, I will respond.

JudeDr Sock https://www.blogger.com/profile/13378594360241846301noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2137356124184306084.post-60820834313147467932017-03-15T09:22:38.040-07:002017-03-15T09:22:38.040-07:00Like Karen, I saw myself in the description of the...Like Karen, I saw myself in the description of the first step. Now 4 years into retirement, I am becoming comfortable with the wide open spaces and letting time be. And yet, this past week, I find that I'm annoyed(?) with myself for not coming up with a reply to the often asked question - what's new? Some performance anxiety remains. We'll sit up all night long and talk and talk and talk. That's saying a lot (I'm usually in bed by 9 p.m.) and presuming a lot - we've never met yet here I am suggesting a pyjama party!

But I can't help it. Your paragraph on Recognition was my story too, identical in feeling and varying only slightly in actual details. Your paragraph on Open Space is my journey too. The desire for productivity runs deep. I remember checking time management books out of the library as early as age nine. I still have trouble avoiding the siren call of productivity posts online, but I'm getting better at skimming and discarding instead of savouring and taking notes!

I appreciate the way you have divided this transition time into health, creativity etc. and I applaud you for the tremendous progress you are making in each area. Reading about your journey I am reminded and encouraged to get back on my own. I was doing really well for a while but in the last few months have been feeling stuck. I've done a lot of work on why that is and what to do about it and had decided that yesterday was going to be my fresh start day. It was a good day, capped by your thoughtful post.

Change author MJ Ryan suggests that we name our year. It sounds as if we have the same year, Jude. Congratulations on your Year of Exploration. Onward!Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13447366798740422421noreply@blogger.com
