Beach Compositions

Last week, Rob and I took Kate and went to one of the local beaches a couple of hours before low tide. It was a beautiful sunny afternoon, and we had a lovely time rambling across the sand and circumnavigating tide pools. As it was on the weekend, lots of other people were at the beach too, but it's a big beach.

I was particularly interested in how the waves had left patterns in the sand. They looked dramatic in the late afternoon light.

I took quite a few photos, all with my phone, and share some of them below.

  1. These are great photos to have been taken from a phone. I rarely have such luck with mine!
The patterns in the sand really are interesting! I would have been taking dozens and dozens of photos! The one you labelled 'woven' is my favourite. Nature is amazing in her artwork!

    1. Joanne, I am so lazy about carrying my camera with me, but I always have my phone. I read up on how to adjust light settings when taking iPhoto pictures, and that has improved the quality of the photos I take. I’ve also done some comparison shots using both the camera and iPhone, and often the phone photos are as good as or better than the camera photos. So that’s my excuse!

  3. I love those sand patterns. The woven one is particularly intriguing. I think your dog has something to learn about posing for the camera. No-one seems to have told her she’s supposed to look at it 😉!

    1. Yes, she seems to make a point of turning her butt toward the camera. Similarly, the grandchildren like to make goofy faces when they see a camera pointed their way. It has been ever thus.

    1. Liesbet, I love the beauty of nature. That is why I mostly paint landscapes, as well. One just has to really look at what is all around us.

  7. Very nice photos, Jude. The beauty of nature is wonderful. I think when we take photos of nature, we notice the details even more. You have great eyes for the sand patterns.

    1. Natalie, you are right that taking photos can sharpen our observation skills. On the other hand, sometimes a person can miss out on the experience of the moment when their face is stuck behind a camera, especially if it is something fleeting.

  8. These are beautiful - I don't think we have anything similar where we are - I guess our waves and tides behave differently?

    1. Leanne, this beach is in a large, very shallow bay. I wonder if that explains the wave patterns on the sand? Now you have caused me to wonder how the rippled patterns in the sand form.
