Welcome, Abby!

We have someone new in our lives.

Abby on the Couch
This is Abby, who has come to live with us. She is a Standard Schnauzer, and she's 5 years old. Did I mention cute? She's very, very cute. And, characteristic of Schnauzers, she's a girl who knows her own mind.

Abby in Backyard
She has been with us for less than two weeks, but has already settled in. In the photo above, Abby is hanging out by the fishpond in our backyard.

Playing with Boomerang

A Drink at the Pond

She loves to play fetch with the squeaky bacon-scented boomerang that my son and his girlfriend gave her. Keep-away is another exciting game. She has met my two grandsons, who were delighted that likes to play fetch.

Rest at the Summit

She is a wonderful walking and hiking companion. We have a network of off-leash trails right outside our door. She has already discovered all the best place to get a drink or wallow in the mud.

Yesterday, Abby and I climbed Notch Hill and had a nice rest in the shade when we reached the summit.

Our cat, Oliver, has taken over Abby's dog bed. But she's okay with it.

Rob with the Pets
Although Abby hasn't lived with a cat before, it looks like Abby and Oliver are quickly becoming pals.

Wherever we go, she likes to jump in the car and come along.

A Walk on the Boardwalk

We are delighted to welcome Abby into our life.

  1. That’s wonderful! She looks so cute. And Oliver is a handsome chap too (don’t want his nose to be put out of joint by praising only the dog)!

    1. Oliver seems to be quite happy having Abby here. He’s used to dogs and really missed our old blue heeler, Kate, when she passed away last summer. Somehow, the pet family seems complete now.

    1. Pete, we feel so lucky that Abby has come to us. She has always been a well-loved dog, and her former owner has found it very hard to move her to a new home.

  3. Hi Jude! Congratulations to you, your whole family and of course Abby. She seems like a wonderful fit for you and I can see the joy on your face. I'm looking forward to meeting her in person later this summer! ~Kathy

    1. We didn’t realize we were ready for another dog until we saw Abby’s pictures, then we jumped at the chance to get her. Pets do add complications to one’s life, but they are such wonderful companions (as you know). I look forward to seeing you this summer, and introducing Abby to you.

  4. Abby is so cute and looks to be a great addition to your family. I'm amazed at how well Oliver had adapted to his new "sister." We haven't had a pet for a while (and probably won't as long as we want to travel regularly) but I know our house isn't quite as complete without one. I'm looking forward to meeting Abby!

    1. Oliver is an extremely sociable cat and was best buddies with our other dogs, so I’m not surprised that he’s adjusted to Abby. And I’m glad Abby is getting along with him too. We weren’t sure about having another dog because of the complications travelling, but I’m thrilled to have Abby. I’m looking forward to seeing you this summer, if everything goes well.

    1. Thanks Natalie. I hadn’t realized how lazy I had been getting with regard to my daily walk until Abby came. She is very energetic, and I’m walking farther and more frequently than before, to take her for her walks.

  6. Ooooh, how wonderful, Jude! Hello, Abby!!!

I’m so happy for all of you, especially Abby, who has found the perfect home. It’s amazing that she is already settled in, walks off leash, and has adjusted to Oliver, all in two weeks. What a wonderful and cute companion. I was wondering about her past and where you adopted her, but those questions have mostly been answered in the comments...

Enjoy the hikes and being a “complete” family again.

    1. Hi Liesbet. It was actually a gradually transition. In April, we drove down to Victoria to meet Abby and her owner, and take her for a walk. Then a week later, we drove down again and picked her up and brought her home for a weekend “sleepover.” Then two weeks ago, her owner brought her here and dropped her off to stay permanently. He’s coming for another visit this week. She seems to have adjusted extremely well.

  8. I love Abby already and hope to meet her someday. I have a huge soft spot for all things Schnauzer. I was lucky enough to have 2 of these wonderful dogs in my life, and hopefully someday I'll have another. Congratulations on being a dog mom again!

    1. Deb, my first dog, Sophie, was a Schnauzer cross, so I am familiar with the Schnauzer mindset. Rob says they’re opinionated just like me, so that’s why we get along together so well! How cool that you have had Schnauzers previously. I hope you do get another one in the future.

  9. Hi Judith, We have been off the grid camping on the West Coast, so I am late reading and responding to this wonderful post. Abby is adorable! It is great how she is a wonderful walking and hiking companion. As you know, not all dogs like to get out on the trails. Your grandchildren must be major in love with her. Your huge smile speaks volumes.

    1. Hi Erica. Yes, Abby has brought a lot of joy into our life. Even as we welcome Abby, our elderly cat Oliver is experiencing cascading health problems and may not be with us much longer. Having pets brings both joy and sadness. I’m glad you were able to connect with Deb and Donna in Tofino recently. We are planning a camping trip with my daughter’s family soon.

    2. She is adorable!! She looks very well settled in and how great that she is getting along with your cat. Usually in my experience, most dogs automatically chase cats and need to be taught NOT to. Wonderful. Enjoy.

    3. Peta, we were unsure about how Abby would respond to the cat and the grandkids, seeing as she had previously spent little time around cats or children. I give Oliver credit for making friends with Abby; he’s such a sociable guy. With the grandkids, Abby was initially quite wary of them. She’s not used to humans who shout and dash about. Although the boys have a dog, it’s an elderly husky that has been with them their whole lives, and is used to children. After a couple of visits, Abby and the boys got on well, although one of my grandsons gets annoyed that every time he picks up a stick, Abby rushes over and tries to grab it - she loves to play fetch. However, they love the fact that she likes to play and walks off-leash.

    4. Abby looks just like the dog I lost last year after giving me many years of dog-love. Schnauzers are their own person, aren't they.

  11. Oh my goodness! I love Abby! Six years ago my gorgeous Standard Schnauzer Tiffany left me. She was almost 16. I rescued her when she was three. The best dog in the world. And Abby is a dead ringer for Tiffany. Schnauzers are the best of the best!

  12. I just found this post. I had a rescue standard schnauzer for 13 wonderful years. I still miss her terribly.. The second photo looks just like her. They are wonderful dogs.
